Lasers emit focused light energy targeting specific cells or components, such as melanin in skin. When addressing dark patches, lasers target these melanin-filled chromophores. Using conservative settings ensures safety, but there's still a slight risk of increased pigmentation. Lasers are typically a secondary treatment option for hyperpigmentation.
Spots on the skin, including age spots, sunspots, freckles, and birthmarks, are a very common skin condition. Many people may wish to remove these spots to create a more even and pleasing skin tone. If you just have a small number of spots, it may be more efficient to just treat the spots instead of trying to treat an entire area. Spots can be removed anywhere on the body.
Lasers can be used to treat benign (harmless) pigmented lesions, including freckles, sunspots, angiomas, seborrheic keratosis, pigmented nevi, and cafe-au-lait birthmarks. Lasers are not used to treat moles or malignant (cancerous or pre-cancerous) lesions. After treatment, the outline of a spot may still be visible, but the color will be lighter to blend in with the surrounding skin. We usually recommend two laser sessions, the first removes half or more of the pigment, and the second removes the rest.
